Skeletal formula of oxytocin

Oxytocin is a neuropeptide found in humans and virtually all vertebrates involved primarily in reproduction and social behavior.

Oxytocin exerts its effects through agonism of oxytocin receptors as well as positive allosteric modulation of opioid receptors.[1] Oxytocin is involved in producing the effects of several psychoactive substances, particularly empathogens, psychedelics, and cannabinoids. Oxytocin is implicated in mental disorders including autism which is associated with reduced oxytocin activity, as well as schizophrenia spectrum and bipolar disorders where oxytocin activity is dysregulated and dysfunctionally increased in psychosis and mania.[2]

Subjective effects associated with increased oxytocin include empathy, affection and sociability enhancement, cognitive euphoria, anxiety suppression, personal meaning enhancementcreativity enhancement, increased music appreciation, motivation enhancement, increased libido, increased sense of humor, pain relief, mania, and paranoia.[2]
