ABSTRACT: THE PURPOSE OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS IS TO PROVIDE A SEMI-PROFESSIONAL METHOD OF THE ACID-BASED (AGENT LEMON) EXTRACTION PROCESS FOR CONVERTING [COUGH SYRUP CONTAINING] DXM-HBr TO DXM-Citrate (DXM + CITRIC ACID) ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

EQUIPMENT (ABOUT $160 ON AMAZON): - BOROSILICATE GLASS SEPARATORY FUNNEL (AT LEAST 1000ml RECOMMENDED; ABOUT $50 ON AMAZON)

 w/ GLASS STOPCOCK, CLAMP, AND SUPPORT STAND (ABOUT $30 ON AMAZON)

- BOROSILICATE GLASS BEAKER SET (ABOUT $10 FOR A BASIC SET ON AMAZON) - HOT PLATE THAT CAN HEAT UP TO OR ABOVE THE BOILING POINT OF WATER (100°C/212°F)

PROCEDURE: 1. TRANSFER THE DXM-POLISTIREX/HBr COUGH SYRUP TO THE SEPARATORY FUNNEL

   * ENSURE THAT THE STOPCOCK IS CLOSED PRIOR

2. POUR THE AMMONIA INTO THE SEPERATORY FUNNEL

   > USE A VOLUME OF AMMONIA SLIGHTLY ABOVE THAT OF THE DXM-POLISTIREX/HBr COUGH SYRUP
   * AVOID EXCESS INHALATION OF TOXIC FUMES AND CHEMICAL-SKIN CONTACT WHILE HANDLING AMMONIA

3. INSERT THE STOPPER, THEN GENTLY SWIRL THE SEPARATORY FUNNEL TO FORM A LIGHT MIXTURE

   * MAKE SURE TO PERIODICALLY RELEASE BUILT UP PRESSURE BY INVERTING THE FUNNEL AND OPENING THE STOPCOCK
   * AGGRESSIVE SHAKING MAY LEAD TO EXCESS PRESSURE [OR ACCIDENTAL BREAKAGE]. THE SHAPE OF A SEPERATORY FUNNEL ALLOWS FOR EFFICIENT MIXING, SO 
     EXCESS FORCE IS UNNECESSARY. SIMPLY GRIP DIRECTLY ABOVE THE STOPCOCK WITH THE NONDOMINATE HAND, GRIP THE FUNNEL BODY IN THE DOMINATE HAND, AND 
     MAKE INWARD HAND ROTATIONS TO PRODUCE AN INFINITY-SHAPED WAVE PATTERN AND CRASHING EFFECT IN THE MIXTURE  
   * AFTER MIXING FOR A FEW MINUTES, AND IF PRESSURE IS NO LONGER BUILDING UP INSIDE THE FUNNEL, THE SUSPENSION WILL BE SUFFICIENTLY MIXED 
   ~ SINCE ANOTHER INGREDIENT WILL BE ADDED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THIS STEP, THIS MIXING CAN BE VERY BRIEF

4. WHEN COMPOUNDS HAVE MIXED SUFFICIENTLY: ADD THE ORGANIC SOLVENT AND REPEAT 'STEP 3'

   > USE A VOLUME OF ORGANIC SOLVENT THAT IS A LITTLE OVER 10% OF THE SUSPENSION'S TOTAL VOLUME
   * AVOID EXCESS INHALATION OF TOXIC FUMES AND CHEMICAL-SKIN CONTACT WHILE HANDLING THE ORGANIC SOLVENT

5. WHEN COMPOUNDS HAVE FORMED A SUSPENSION: CLAMP THE SEPARATORY FUNNEL TO THE SUPPORT STAND, REMOVE THE STOPPER, THEN WAIT FOR THE SUSPENSION TO SETTLE

   * WAIT APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES FOR THE SUSPENSION TO FULLY SETTLE (A THIN BUBBLY LAYER MAY FORM ON TOP. THIS WILL BE DEALT WITH IN 'STEP 7')
   * THE ORGANIC PHASE, CONTAINING DXM AND THE ORGANIC SOLVENT, WILL RISE TO THE TOP OF THE SUSPENSION. 
   ~ IF AN EXCESS LAYER OF BUBBLES REMAIN ON TOP OF THE ORGANIC PHASE: ADD A LITTLE MORE NAPHTHA AND AMMONIA, GENTLY SWIRL THE SUSPENSION AGAIN, 
     AND WAIT ANOTHER 20 MINUTES FOR THE SUSPENSION TO FULLY SETTLE AGAIN 
     FOR THE SUSPENSION TO SETTLE
   * THE AQUEOUS PHASE, CONTAINING AMMONIA, HYDROBROMIDE, AND INACTIVE COUGH SYRUP INGREDIENTS WILL SINK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SUSPENSION
   ~ WHILE WAITING, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO COMPLETE 'STEP 9'

6. PLACE A BEAKER DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH THE SEPARATORY FUNNEL AND OPEN THE STOPCOCK UNTIL ONLY THE ORGANIC PHASE REMAINS IN THE FUNNEL

   * ENSURE THAT THE STOPPER HAS BEEN REMOVED PRIOR TO AVOID PERIODIC GURGLING WHILE DRAINING
   * AS THE AQUEOUS PHASE FINISHES DRAINING, CAUTIOUSLY CLOSE AND OPEN THE STOPCOCK IN QUICK BURSTS TO MINIMIZE LOSS OF THE ORGANIC PHASE
   > SAFELY DISCARD THE AQUEOUS PHASE AND RINSE OUT THE BEAKER

7. ADD WATER TO THE ORGANIC PHASE AND REPEAT 'STEPS 5-6' TO MINIMIZE IMPURIFITIES IN THE ORGANIC PHASE

   > USE AN APPROXIMATE VOLUME OF WATER EQUAL TO THAT OF THE ORGANIC PHASE (A LITTLE OVER HOW MUCH NAPTHA WAS USED IN 'STEP 4')
   > REPEAT AS NEEDED (2-4 TIMES RECOMMENDED)
   ~ WHILE WAITING, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO COMPLETE 'STEP 9' (IF NOT ALREADY COMPLETED DURING 'STEP 5')

9. PREPARE A HYDROCITRATE SOLUTION, USING CITRIC ACID AND WATER

   > USE A PINCH OVER 7g (1 ROUNDED TEASPOON) OF CITRIC ACID FOR EVERY 160mg OF TOTAL DXM BEING USED
   > USE APPROXIMATELY 60ml (2 FLUID OUNCES) OF WATER FOR EVERY 200mg OF TOTAL DXM BEING USED
   * MAKE A NOTE OF HOW MUCH CITRIC ACID IS USED, AS THIS INFORMATION WILL BE NECESSARY FOR PROPER DOSING

10. ADD THE HYDROCITRATE SOLUTION TO THE ORGANIC PHASE AND REPEAT 'STEP 3' 11. WHEN THE COMPOUNDS HAVE FORMED A SUSPENSION, CLAMP THE SEPARATORY FUNNEL TO THE SUPPORT STAND AND ALLOW THE SUSPENSION TO SETTLE

   * WAIT BETWEEN 45-60 MINUTES FOR THE SUSPENSION TO SETTLE
   * THE ORGANIC PHASE, CONTAINING THE ORGANIC SOLVENT, WILL RISE TO THE TOP OF THE SUSPENSION
   * THE AQUEOUS PHASE, CONTAINING DXM-HYDROCITRATE, WILL SINK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SUSPENSION  

12. PLACE A BEAKER DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH THE SEPERATORY FUNNEL AND OPEN THE STOPCOCK UNTIL ONLY THE ORGANIC PHASE REMAINS IN THE FUNNEL 13. SAFELY DISCARD THE ORGANIC PHASE

   ~ MANY INEXPERIENCED DXM-CHEMISTS REUSE THE ORGANIC SOLVENT IN FUTURE PROCEDURES. THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED, BECAUSE THE ORGANIC SOLVENT'S ABILITY 
     TO PULL AND BIND TO DXM IN 'STEPS 4-5' EXPONENTIALLY DECREASES AFTER EACH USE - LEADING TO THE RESPECTIVE SUSPENSION NOT SETTLING PROPERLY

14. TRANSFER THE DXM-HYDROCITRATE TO A BEAKER

   ~ AT THIS POINT, THE PRODUCT MAY BE CONSUMED IF DESIRED. HOWEVER, FOLLOWING 'STEPS 13-14' IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO MINIMIZE ANY REMAINING IMPURITIES. 
     ALSO, SINCE THE HYDROCITRATE CALLED FOR A HIGH VOLUME OF WATER [THAT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY FOR INGESTION], CONSUMING THE DXM-HYDROCITRATE AT 
     THIS POINT WOULD BE UNNECESSARILY TEDIUS AND UNPLEASANT

15. PLACE THE BEAKER ON THE CENTER OF A HOTPLATE AND DROP A MAGNETIC STIRRING BAR INTO THE DXM-HYDROCITRATE SOLUTION

   * ENSURE THAT THE MAGNETIC STIRRING BAR IS BEING PULLED BY THE MAGNETIC COIL IN THE HOT PLATE BY GENTLY MOVING THE BEAKER IN SMALL CIRCLES
   * ENSURE THAT THE BEAKER IS CENTERED BY STIRRING AT A LOW SETTING AND GENTLY MOVING THE BEAKER ALONG THE HOTPLATE UNTIL THE BAR LOCKS INTO PLACE
     AND ROTATES IN A CIRCULAR MOTION WITHOUT HITTING THE GLASS. FAILING TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN CHEMICAL SPLASHING AND BROKEN EQUIPMENT

16. SET THE TEMPERATURE OF THE HOTPLACE TO 100°C/212°F, THEN ADJUST THE STIRRING SPEED AS NEEDED TO BOIL AWAY AS MUCH WATER FROM THE SOLUTION AS DESIRED

   * IT IS RECOMMENDED TO REMAIN NEAR THE HOT PLATE TO ENSURE THAT THE PRODUCT IS NOT BURNING AND/OR SPLASHING

17. IF SUCCESSFUL, THE RESULTING PRODUCT SHOULD BE A DXM-HYDROCITRATE SHOT BETWEEN 30-60ML (1-2 FLUID OUNCES)

   * ENSURE THAT THE HEAT HAS BEEN TURNED OFF
   * IT IS RECOMMENDED TO PUT ON HEAT RESISTANT GLOVES AND MOVE THE PRODUCT TO LOCATION WHERE IT CAN SAFELY COOL. IF GLOVES ARE NOT AVILABLE, SET THE 
     STIRRER TO LOW AND LEAVE THE PRODUCT ON THE HOTPLATE FOR 5-10 MINUTES UNTIL THE BEAKER IS SAFE TO TOUCH.  
   ~ TO MAXIMIZE THE DEHYDRATION OF DXM-HYDROCITRATE, POUR THE PRODUCT INTO A FLAT GLASS DISH AND LET SIT FOR SEVERAL HOURS
   ~ PRECISE TEMPERATURE AND STIRRING CONTROL IN 'STEP 15' CAN RESULT IN A DXM-CITRATE PRODUCT. THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED DUE TO THE RISK OF BURNED PRODUCT 
     AND THE TEDIUS EFFORT REQUIRED TO CLEAN BURNED BEAKERS. ALSO, IT TAKES MUCH LONGER FOR THE STOMACH TO ABSORB PURE DXM THAN IT DOES WHEN AN ACID SALT 
     IS PRESENT. HOWEVER, IF THIS EXTRA STEP IS PURSUED, A WAY TO CIRCUMVENT THE EXTENDED ABSORBTION TIME IS BY EATING FOOD WITH THE PURE DXM TO INCREASE 
     THE STOMACH ACID PRODUCTION AND LIPID SUPPORT, WHICH ALLOWS FOR SMOOTHER DIGESTION. A BETTER RECOMMENDATION IS TO ENCAPSULATE THE FINAL PRODUCT, 
     SINCE MOST TEND TO FIND THE TASTE OF [EVEN 100%] PURE DXM TO BE UNPLEASANT

18. ENSURE THAT THE HOTPLATE HAS BEEN FULLY SWITCHED OFF AND RINSE OUT ANY USED EQUIPMENT TO AVOID POTENTIAL TOXICITY IN FUTURE PROCEDURES
