Nicotine acts as an agonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which belong to the family of ligand-gated ion channel receptors. This causes both excitatory and inhibitory effects, due to the initial stimulation being followed by receptor desensitization, meaning that the receptor will not open the ion channel, even when bound to an agonist.
