Phenylalanine is an essential α-amino acid with the formula C9H11NO found in many foods. The amino acid is metabolized by your liver into l-tyrosine, where it crosses the blood brain barrier and is biosynthesized to l-dopa. L-dopa is used to form the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline).
