Jack Kerouac

So I know a little bit about Jack Kerouac, I know that he wrote about his drug use quite a bit, mostly benzedrine and "tea", and that he experimented with practically everything. But is that enough to list him? Or is there something I'm not aware about him? Is it perhaps his culture influence that partially lead to the 60's counterculture?
